We are so thankful to our Heavenly Father from whom all blessings flow. As of July 31st here is what we have accomplished:
$627,742 in funds have been received/pledged.
Over 4000 informational/fundraising brochures have been distributed to individuals in the South Bay attending many of the Churches that support us.
Our plans are with the city and though we have suffered another small setback, we are thankful because we know that God’s timing is perfect and when the time is right everything will fall into place. (see Plans Report below)*
A fundraiser sponsored by Baskin Robbins in the Rolling Hills Plaza is scheduled for August 15th, 20% of the proceeds from all checks that present our coupon will be donated to the shelter.
Our Cookbook fundraiser is under way and the recipes have begun pouring in! We hope to have the cookbook ready for sale by the middle of November just in time for Chirstmas!
We spoke with the Women’s circle at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Torrance on the 16th and enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship while garnering more support for our project.
Our promotional DVD is slated for completion within a month.
* Plans Report
In June we were advised by the City Planning Department that we will need a variance to allow our locating the Doors of Hope Women’s Shelter within 600 feet of the Beacon Light Mission. This information was included in our original application but overlooked by them when we processed the Regulation Q Clarification request. We will be writing the request for this variance along with a request for a waiver on the parking requirement at the same time.
We need to locate an abandoned oil well on the property and determine that it is properly capped plus get a methane test completed. We currently are digging in the reported location of the well but have not located it as yet. If we cannot locate the well, we will have to hire a licensed surveyor to locate it for us. If methane is found on the property, it will require us to modify the foundation plan to allow for venting.
We have been advised that the City is requiring a 5 foot set back on the north side of the property. We will extend the rear wall of the dorm to make up for the lost space to the side. We have also been advised that we cannot have parking access from Broad Avenue.
