Lives and Hearts Change at Beacon Light Mission
Read the stories of men and women transformed by the Gospel and the care of our staff and volunteers.
When someone walks into Beacon Light for the first time, he or she is carrying the weight of painful circumstances like addiction, abandonment, abuse, homelessness, and hopelessness.
What they are met with is love and care from our staff and volunteers. It begins with a simple warm meal, a fresh shower, a clean seat of clothes, and a safe place to rest. Soon after, their lives are completely transformed, and they are able to look at life with a renewed sense of healing, hope, and purpose through a new life in Christ.
Read the real stories of men and women who have come to us with nothing and left with everything in Christ:
Bonita’s Story:
“I’m so grateful to have found Doors of Hope through a cousin when I was escaping an abusive relationship and seeking a safe place for myself and my adult autistic daughter. After escaping a violent situation, I had nowhere to go, and my relatives discouraged me from leaving.
Doors of Hope Women’s Shelter gave me more than just a safe haven—they cared for my body, mind, and spirit. They provided hot showers, new clothes, hygiene supplies, and daily devotions and worship. Churches generously served dinner every night, easing the stress of my journey.
I am forever thankful to God for leading me here. Doors of Hope at Beacon Light Mission have been my refuge during difficult times, and I trust them completely. To God be the Glory!”
Elizabeth’s Story:
“Through the highs and lows of my life, I always thought I had a connection with God. But it wasn’t until I entered Doors of Hope that I truly experienced a personal relationship with Him. I’ve learned to put the Lord first every day—something I couldn’t do in the world.
From daily devotions to evening chapel, God is at the center of everything here. His guidance has transformed me, shaping my actions with staff and guests and making me a new person from the ashes of homelessness.
This God-centered, safe, and caring shelter has become my family. I pray that the Lord continues
to guide me on the straight and narrow as I move forward. There’s no better place to be than Doors
of Hope.”
Leslie’s Story:
“I arrived at Doors of Hope [2 weeks after losing my apartment]. Before that, I lived in isolation—broken, anxious, and depressed. I was far from God and merely existing, not living.
God led me to this faith-based shelter, where I’ve renewed my relationship with Jesus. He has softened my heart and restored me as His child. No longer drawn to the things of the world, I’ve taken that first step back to God. Today, I’m confident, less anxious, and filled with gratitude.
I’m now happy to serve God by serving others here at Doors of Hope.”
Cynthia’s Story:
Cynthia came to us after losing her mom in 2019 and facing the challenges of living with schizophrenia. The loss of her mother and her home in a fire left her feeling overwhelmed and homeless. She began sleeping in her car and passed by CC South Bay Church daily. One day, something led her to stop and seek help.
At the church, Pastor Dwight prayed with her and listened to her story. Soon after, Cynthia was introduced to the Doors of Hope Women’s Program, where she entered the Extended Stay Program and worked with Exodus Recovery. The program helped her address both emotional and spiritual needs, bringing structure, peace, and a deeper relationship with Jesus.
Now, Cynthia is preparing to move into her own apartment, feeling excited and hopeful for the future. “I yearn for more,” she says.
Felicia’s Story:
Felicia spent years running—from an abusive marriage, from drugs, alcohol, and unsafe relationships. After a traumatic brain injury and multiple attempts to escape her abusive relationship, she found herself homeless and struggling. She was placed in a hospital on a 5150 (an involuntary psychiatric hold) and given a list of shelters to contact. Doors of Hope was the only one with an opening.
At first, Felicia felt trapped by her controlling relationship, but God took care of things. She stayed at Doors of Hope, where she began to learn how to live God’s way and found the peace she had been searching for.
Encouraged by the support she received, Felicia reconciled with her family and was given transportation home. Today, she’s back with her parents, excited for a safe, stable life and a future full of hope.
Alex’s Story:
“For most of my life, I didn’t feel safe or loved,” Alex shared. “My family barely communicated with me, and I was left to figure things out on my own.”
That sense of abandonment deepened when his father became ill and returned to Japan for treatment. His mother soon followed, leaving Alex completely alone in the family home. “Two years went by with almost no contact,” he said. “Then I found out my dad had passed away—and I still haven’t heard from my mom.”
Already struggling with depression and anxiety, Alex was blindsided when he was evicted from his home. With nowhere to go, he packed what he could in a backpack and called a family friend—and the police. He was offered a ride and a place to stay for a few nights, but after that, he was on his own.
That’s when he found Beacon Light Mission.
“This place changed everything,” he said. “My basic needs are finally being met. I feel safe. I’ve been able to get help for my mental health and start healing from years of emotional pain.”
But the biggest change has been spiritual. “Being here has brought me back to God. I’ve learned how to pray, how to open my Bible, and how to be honest—with myself and with Him. I’m not the same person I was when I walked through the doors. Now, I have hope.”
Your support will help Beacon Light Mission transform even more lives of the men and women who walk through our doors.
