The Only Gospel Mission
in the South Bay Since 1905
In 1905, a small band of Christians in San Pedro looked at the rough docks and saw more than weary sailors—they saw lives worth saving. What began on the creaking hull of an old tugboat soon became a beacon of refuge on land. They purchased a modest building on Beacon Street and called it the Sailor’s Rest Mission, offering hot meals, warm beds, and the life-changing hope of the Gospel.
As the needs of the harbor community expanded beyond sailors, so did the mission’s heart. By the 1940s, they had a new name—Beacon Light Mission—and a larger home where hundreds of men found shelter, dignity, and a chance to begin again.
Even when Beacon Street—once called the “roughest street in the world”—was torn down and we were forced to move, our vision never faltered. In 1972, we reopened in Wilmington and flourished through the faithful support of churches, volunteers, donors, and community partners. Our ministry grew with every meal served and every life transformed. In 2011, after years of prayer, planning, and perseverance, we opened the Doors of Hope Women’s Shelter next door, filling a desperate gap for homeless women who had nowhere else to go.
Today, we offer meals, shelter, showers, counseling, Bible studies, & transportation to anyone in need—regardless of background, race, or religion.
From a floating ministry on the harbor to two thriving shelters, we have stayed anchored to one calling: to change lives through the love and grace of Jesus Christ. Every volunteer, every church group, every donor, and every staff member becomes part of our story—shining light into dark places and helping men and women step into new beginnings.
